Snake & Spider Bite First Aid Kit
Living and working in Australia often means living with the risk of an unexpected snake or spider bite. Which is why First Aid Works has designed our Snake and Spider Bite First Aid Kit which includes detailed instructions and a snake identification card.
One of the most important steps of treating a snake or spider bite is applying a compression bandage. But when using an unmarked bandage, it is often hard to tell if the correct pressure is being applied to ensure effectiveness. For this reason, our Spider & Snake Bite First Aid Kits use special bandages with continuous Indicators to show the correct tension needed – these Indicators are rectangular and will become square when the appropriate stretch is being used.
A comprehensive spider or snake bite kit should be a staple wherever you are living and working in Australia. The Snake and Spider Bite First Aid Kit is perfectly suited for work sites and vehicles, for the home and garage, and for leisure activities like camping and boating.
How common is it to get a bite?
In Australia, we have about 2000 snake bites each year and an equal amount of redback spider bites. Not to mention all the other spiders and insects that can cause a nasty sting, bite, or reaction.
We have 10 highly venomous snakes in Australia, including the well-renowned Brown snake, the Taipan, and the Tiger snake to name a few. However, even with our snake ID card, not everybody is an expert in identifying the type of snake when bitten and research shows that venom is usually unsuccessfully released (aka dry bite) in 90% of snake bites. Regardless, when bitten, there is no way to tell if venom was released and injected into the body. For these reasons each snake or spider bite should be treated as if it is venomous bite.
Snake & Spider bite symptoms
A snake or spider bite is not always visible, and the symptoms can also be delayed. Therefore, if you believe you have been bitten you should seek immediate medical attention.
Venom can travel through your bloodstream and cause serious issues to your muscles and nervous system which can lead to paralysis, a coma, or ultimately death.

Venomous snake or spider treatment:
- Record the time, description, and symptoms or take photographs of the site and refer to the snake bite treatment instructions.
- Keep the casualty reassured and calmly lying down.
- Don’t remove any venom from the body or clothes to help possible identification for anti-venom.
- Wrap the elastic crepe bandage around the bite area asap.
- If the bite is on a limb, wrap the compression bandage firmly from just above the fingers or toes upwards towards the bite and covering the whole limb as far as possible.
- Splint the limb and ask the casualty to remain still until help arrives.
Non-venomous spider bites & other stings:
- Clean the area with soap and water to avoid infection.
- Apply an ice pack for 15 minutes and re-apply if pain persists.
- Elevate the limb and get further medical assistance if symptoms worsen.
