Most Minor Burns occur in the home environment and, like Major Burns, they need immediate medical attention. Follow our 3-step guide for the treatment of minor burns.
IMPORTANT – Always call 000 or go to the emergency department if a burn has any of these traits: it is larger than 3cm (or a 20 cent piece), it is deep and/or painless, it is located near the face, genitals or hands, or it was caused by chemicals or electricity.
When a burn is minor, or when waiting for an ambulance, you can follow these 3 steps:
1. Remove yourself or the victim from danger. Remove any clothing/jewellery near the burn, but DO NOT remove any clothing stuck to the burn.
2. Cool the burned area as quickly as possible using cool, running water for at least 20 minutes. This can be done under a tap or shower. DO NOT use ice or ice water on the burned area.
3. Cover the burn using a light, non-stick, non-fluffy material. If the burn is minor and superficial, you can apply a hydrogel before bandaging to relieve the victim’s pain. Once the burn is covered, elevate the area if possible to reduce swelling.
